Stockeld Park

If you’re looking for a full day of adventure, then Stockeld Park is a great family friendly day out that is situated on the A661 between Wetherby and Harrogate and is just a short 30-minute drive away from Burley-in-Wharfedale. It’s a large adventure park mostly set in woodland and truly is a magical place that is sure to become a firm family favourite.



Where will you head first? Will you get lost in the Maze, slide down the huge inflatable slide, ride the go-karts or explore the Enchanted Forest filled with playgrounds, swings, zip-wires, Bucaneer Boats, Fairy Gardens and Sensory Musical Gardens? Don’t be fooled into thinking you need to save this for a sunny day either. Not at all! Stockeld Park is not just an outdoor venue as they now also boast one of the largest indoor play areas in Europe.

The Playhive is an interactive and original play centre with 4 interconnecting worlds the whole family can enjoy. You can adventure across the jungle, through space, into the air and sea with high level walkways and spiraling slides. There is something here to ignite every imagination from the youngest to the oldest. As far as the best family days out go Stockeld Park is a must! Make sure you look out for special events in the school holidays and festive events at Halloween and Christmas.  


Bolton Abbey

If something a bit more leisurely is more appealing to you, then Bolton Abbey could be the perfect place. Now that you’re living in Burley-in Wharfedale, one of the best family days out is located right on your doorstep, at a mere 20-minute drive away. With the beautiful ruins of the abbey set in stunning scenery you can follow the woodland path along the riverside. There’s plenty of activities, including the Welly Walk to keep everyone occupied along the way.



You could pack a picnic to have on the sandy beach area which is perfect for keeping little ones entertained and watch as the older ones attempt to cross the river’s famous stepping stones. Alternatively, you could top it off with a sumptuous Sunday dinner or treat the family to an Afternoon Tea at the nearby Devonshire Arms Hotel & Spa.

Tropical World

If you just have an afternoon to spare or a few hours to fill, then maybe you could visit Tropcial World at Roundhay near Leeds. At only 27-minutes drive away it’s easy to see why Burley-In-Wharfedale is an ideal location for some of the best family days out. This indoor wildlife park is home to many exotic animals including butterflies, snakes, meerkats and aquatic animals. Here you can meander your way around the beautiful butterfly house, witness the caterpillars emerge and get up close and personal with the butterflies. If you have extra time you can explore the scenic walks and gardens of Roundhay Park too.    



Knaresborough & Mother Shipton’s Cave

When looking for things to do in and around Burley-in-Wharfedale then a visit to nearby Knaresborough is a must. After just a quick 29-minute drive you can find yourself in the idyllic market town of Knaresborough where you can take a walk along the riverside along to Mother Shipton’s Cave, the home of England’s most famous prophetess, and experience the magic of everyday objects being turned to stone. You can make the most of the picturesque River Nidd by hiring a rowboat and enjoying the views from the water itself or climb up high to explore the remains of the Medieval Castle stronghold that still overlooks the river.

Eureka! National Childrens Museum

For the rainy days when an indoor venue is essential, look no further than Eureka! The National Children’s Museum in Halifax.  It may be a lengthier drive at 51-minutes but well worth it for families with children 0-11years looking for a jam-packed day filled with an abundance of interactive exhibits to inspire inquisitive minds and encourage hands on learning.  With role play areas for toddlers to explore and interactive games for older children it really is one of the best family days out near Burley-In-Wharfedale.



Xscape Yorkshire

If you want a one-stop shop indoor activities to suit even the most diverse family’s needs then you can take a trip to Xscape Yorkshire in Castleford. There is everything you can possibly want all under one roof. At Xscape you can take your pick from a wide range of activities such as skiing, snowboarding, climbing, trampolining, e-karting, bowling, laser tag, crazy golf, soft play, arcades, cinema, shopping and dining. At 51-minutes’ drive away it’s one to plan ahead for but really worthwhile as one of the best family days out around.

 

Best outdoor attractions


York Maze

Situated slightly further afield in York, it may be a 57-minute drive, but York Maze makes for absolutely essential Summer visiting. Its only open for a short period over the Summer but is rated one of the best family days out in Yorkshire. Featuring the UK’s largest corn maze created from over one million maize plants it also has award-winning shows, attractions and rides. There are also mini mazes (each with a different theme) for younger ones, bouncy pillows, the unique house of illusion, all finished off with a family friendly foam party with plenty of adult laughs along the way. It really is fun for all the family.
