South Bank Re-development Set To Transform Leeds City Centre

It’s an exciting time for the Wortley, Holbeck, Hunslet, Armley and other surrounding areas in Leeds, as the city’s South Bank Regeneration project really starts to get moving. The ambitious regeneration plans will see the size of Leeds’ city centre almost double, creating along with it 35,000 jobs and over 4,000 new homes.

South Bank actually refers to a number of related investments and proposed activities aimed at regenerating the 185 hectares of land that lies south of the River Aire. To give that figure some perspective, 185 hectares is the equivalent of 250 football pitches in size!

Already this particular area of Leeds is home to Asda’s headquarters, as well as the Sky offices, 3,000 residents and over 250 other creative and digital businesses making it a leading location for the regions digital economy. As part of the future plans for the area, one key proposal is to develop a European location for investment, creativity, leisure and living. So, in other words, South Bank is about to get a whole lot livelier.

Most importantly for new home buyers though, the area is about to become a whole lot more desirable and not to mention much better connected. In the current HS2 plans, South Bank will gain a new train station, integrating the area even more closely with Leeds Station and reducing travel times both locally and nationally. That means that with HS2’s arrival, you can realistically live in Leeds and work in London, and some might say that’s the best of both worlds.

As well as public transport upgrades, the road network, walking routes, cycling routes and waterfront are also set to be transformed and super-fast broadband is also on the way. This will ensure the area is better connected to employment and leisure facilities as well as other key amenities.

A new city centre park will also be introduced providing swathes of green outdoor space which is great news for young families moving it to the area. Many of South Bank’s historic buildings are also going to be brought back in to use preserving the industrial, Victoria heritage of the site and providing plenty of urban style and sophistication.
