The transport links in and around Burton Leonard are great, especially as the A1 motorway is only a 6.9 mile drive away, and there’s even bus routes to Knaresborough and Ripon available every 2 hours daily, so a fun day out is always an option! You can even hop on the coach which will take you directly to Boroughbridge, so you can explore the cafes, pubs, shops and restaurants that the thriving high street has to offer.
 

Places to visit


If you’re looking for a fun family day out, then Newby Hall and Gardens should be on the top of your list. Here you’ll find the 18th century country house crammed full of ancient artefacts, stunning gardens to explore, and an adventure playground where the little ones can really tire themselves out. Fountains Abbey is one of the largest and best-preserved monasteries in England, and get this, it’s only 10 miles from Burton Leonard! If you’re looking for an action-packed day that’s fun for all the family, then Lightwater Valley is the place you need to be. A theme park with over 30 rides suitable for all ages, you’re sure to have the best time running riot beating people to the front of the queue. Oh, did we mention it’s 10 miles here also?!
 
For a more relaxed and low-key day, Harrogate and Ripon are only a short drive away. In Harrogate you’ll find visitor attractions such as The Turkish Baths & Health Spa and Betty's CafĂ© and Tea Rooms – the afternoon tea is one to try! Whilst in Ripon you can explore the thriving marketplace and have a day out at the races!

Burton Leonard isn’t short of opportunities to get out and enjoy the outdoors, there’s plenty of walks that suit all walking abilities. South Stainley, Burton Leonard and the Lime Quarries Wildlife Reserve walk is a straightforward and easy walk found in the countryside between Ripon and Harrogate through two villages and a disused quarry site which is managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. Ripon Rowel Walk to Burton Leonard a linear walk from Ripon which takes you along the banks of the Ripon Canal and the River Ure and through the villages of Bishop Monkton and Burton Leonard.

 
Schools


If you’re thinking of moving to Burton Leonard for the children, then you certainly won’t be short of excellent options for schools. In the middle of the village, you’ll find the Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ rated Church of England Primary School – surrounded by trees and fields, it’s a beautiful environment to learn and play. If you’re looking for secondary school options, then you need to check out Ripon Grammar School and St Aiden’s C of E school in Harrogate.

 
Community Spirit


The local church, St Leonard’s is situated in the heart of Burton Leonard. The church runs local village activities and Sunday Service is held at 9:30am or 11am. A community event that’s not to be missed is the yearly Scarecrow Festival which is held over the Early May Bank Holiday. A map showing the location of all the scarecrows and the themes can be picked up from the village hall and then you can walk around at your own pace choosing your own route. A few stalls are set up on the village green selling second-hand books and offering tombola prizes. There's a village feast and a flower show that arrives every summer providing great family fun and entertainment.


 
If you want to take part in the local sports clubs, there’s a cricket and football team, as well as a drama group that holds productions yearly. The village hall is home to the Brownies, toddler group, fitness classes as well as the occasional wedding reception or birthday party. How’s this for community spirit, the village hall is also home to the First Responders, who provide first-line emergency response within the village and the surrounding area.
