Your Guide on Moving Home

How To Move Home Without The Headaches

The thought of moving house can fill even the calmest person with dread and anxiety. Just sitting back and contemplating the huge list of personal belongings in your house and the idea of packing them up, moving them and then unpacking them again, can ultimately lead to huge tension headaches.

Here at Chartford we have come up with a few ideas that will hopefully help make moving house slightly less stressful, allowing you the opportunity of a positive experience.

Tip one: declutter

Firstly, before you even consider reaching for those moving boxes you need to de-clutter. This might mean a few trips to the charity shop and the local tip or in some cases it might mean hiring a skip, whatever the option it’s a very important aspect of moving house. There is absolutely no point moving things you don’t need from one place to another. It’s time to be ruthless and find your inner Zen.

Tip two: plan and prepare

Once you have removed all those unwanted items from your life, it is time to begin the moving process and preparation is key. This is the perfect time to do those jobs that you put off for months (sometimes even years) such as defrosting the freezer. If you’ve got your moving date it’s also a good time to contact your utility suppliers old and new. An important factor to remember is that often internet connection may take a few days to set up, after you move into your new home, so ensure you have downloaded any important documents you might need, such as appliance instructions.

A successful move will involve a lot of planning. Benjamin Franklin knew what he was talking about when he said “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.” Lists will inevitably become your best friend during this time. A list of where things will go in your new house, a list of what to buy, a list of people to tell you are moving. The lists are literally endless, but it will help keep you on track.

Tip three: choose a removal company

When choosing a removal company, it can be useful to look for one that is closer to your new house, that way they will have better local knowledge of the area and logistics. Recommendations from friends is also a big win and it’s always best to get at least three quotes. Depending on your situation it also might be beneficial to consider paying someone to do all the packing for you, this could be a real game changer and should relieve a lot of the stress out of moving.

Tip four: decide when to move

Carefully think about which day you want to move on; it can sometimes be cheaper and less stressful moving during the week rather than on a Friday or the weekend. Taking a few days off work and then having the weekend to settle in could ease the pressure. If you have children and/or pets, try and find someone to look after them, knowing they are well looked after whilst you focus on the job in hand is invaluable.

Tip five: start labelling - everthing!

Labelling, this is where those super organised people really shine. Writing what’s in each box and what room it is to go in will save loads of time when unpacking and if you want to be extra organised you can even highlight which drawer/cupboard you want things in.

Tip six: do your homework!

What is the accessibility like to your new home? Measurements, will the sofa fit through the front door or will you have to take it through the French doors? Any new furniture you have ordered for your new home, why not try and plan it out so that it can get delivered straight to your new address, this will take the added strain of organising storage out of the equation.

Tip seven: give yourself plenty of time

Be realistic with timings and allow for any hiccups, maybe even have some contingency plans if you have specific concerns.  Allow time to give the house you are leaving a thoroughly good clean once all the furniture is removed, it is not only courteous but if everyone in the chain follows this rule, everybody moves into a nice, clean house.
