The Feminine Tones Trend

Feminine tones are set to make a come back in 2019

In recent years it has been ‘gendered rooms’ that have been in fashion. By gendered we mean rooms that have been decorated to specifically reflect either femininity or masculinity. Typically, masculine rooms are characterised by rough, exposed materials like wood and brick, leather, animal hides, angular shapes and straight lines, as well as a tendency towards dark colours and metals.

On the other hand, feminine rooms often feature lots of floral details or botanicals, patterns tend to be smaller and more delicate while colours are lighter and shapes are more natural and curvier.

However, as we move through 2019, we’re expecting this trend to tail off, with rooms becoming more gender neutral once again. That doesn’t mean to say we’ll see the death of feminine tones altogether though. Blush, dusty pink and bronze are all set to be firm favourites over the next twelve months, and of course Pantone’s Colour of the Year, Living Coral fits in perfectly with this palette too. Expect to see these colours creep into wallpapers, paint colours of course, curtains, bedding, art work and accessories.

Unlike a truly feminine, gendered interior design scheme though, we think these colours will be used sparingly by the trendsetters this year. So instead of vast expanses of floral wallpaper or layered pink fabrics, we think these colours will be used more like accents and features to breakup more natural colour palettes of taupe, grey and white.

(We used blush pink in our show home at Menston to add a little warmth into an otherwise very neutral master bedroom).

There will also be more blurring of the lines between typically feminine and typically masculine interior design ideas too. So, look out for things like blush pink pin stripes, blending masculine linear lines with soft, feminine colours or big, bold and angular patterns finished in pale pastel colours.
