That’s because it’s no secret that Yorkshire really is one of the best places to live and just in case you don’t believe us, we’ve rustled up 101 reasons why that’s the case. Truly Tasty Food & Drink




 
  • Fish and chips, it’s a classic combination and a traditional Friday night dinner for many Yorkshire locals. You can enjoy it at the coast as well as in the cities with businesses such as the Wetherby Whaler and Harry Ramsden’s keeping this firm favourite readily available.
  • Liquorice, an acquired taste for some, but a proud export of Pontefract near Wakefield, home of the infamous Pontefract cake.
  • The Rhubarb Triangle, it is famous for its rhubarb, boasting some of the largest producers in the UK. Placed between Leeds, Wakefield and Bradford they have become known world-wide as the rhubarb triangle.
  • Yorkshire Tea, frankly need we say more?
  • Kirkstall brewery, based in Leeds complete with a very stylish Tap Room where you can enjoy their range of casks, kegs and bottles.
  • On a similar theme there is also The Black Sheep Brewery based in Masham, a family firm dedicated to championing independent brewing.
  • Yorkshire’s home to the legendary Yorkshire pudding, a must have on any Sunday roast.
  • It’s also home to Yorkshire parkin, a mouth-wateringly good gingerbread cake made with black treacle.
  • Let’s not forget about Yorkshire’s proud cheese producing heritage as well, with Wensleydale Cheese being a popular cheese throughout the whole of the UK.
  • Yorkshire’s not just about food as product either. Did you know, no other county in England (outside of London) has as many Michelin-starred restaurants as Yorkshire? Trust us when we say you can eat well here.

  • There’s Andrew Pern’s Edible Empire, a collection of absolutely fabulous restaurants throughout the county.

  • The unofficial anthem of Yorkshire is the popular folk song On Ilkla Moor Baht ‘at (“On Ilkley Moor without a hat”). If you can understand and pronounce the words, you truly are from Yorkshire.
  • It’s known as God’s own country and not only that, it’s also the largest county in UK.
  • Lonely Planet voted Yorkshire third in the top 10 world regions, behind destinations in India and Australia. The guide mentions Yorkshire's "rugged moorland, heritage homes and cosy pubs" as just some of the reasons why Yorkshire made the top 3.
  • Yorkshire Terriers, this dog breed was developed during the 19th century in Yorkshire and is still a popular canine choice for many dog lovers across the UK.
  • Charles Dickens visited Harrogate in 1858 and described it as “the queerest place with the strangest people in it leading the oddest lives…”

  • If Yorkshire were an independent country is would have finished an incredible twelfth on the league table in the 2012 Olympics, gaining 7 Golds, 2 Silvers and 3 Bronze. Athletes include Jessica Ennis, who competed in the Heptathlon, boxer Nicola Adams and cyclist Ed Clancy.
