8 Winter Decor Ideas To Try This Season

Many of us take the seasons changing as a cue to switch up the decor of our homes to reflect what’s taking place outside. And whilst the winter season brings its own unique beauty and joy, there’s no denying the darker nights and colder weather which come along with it too. And this means that for many of us, winter equals spending more and more time inside our homes. So there’s no better time than the winter months to invest in making each and every room of the home feel cosy and inviting. After all, it’s where we’ll be spending the most time…

Change the bedding

Here’s a quick fix to get the bedroom winter season ready! Change over to a winter duvet to keep warm and comfortable throughout colder nights, and introduce blankets and cushions to add layers of warmth and texture to the space.

Add blankets and throws

It’s not just the bedroom where additional blankets and throws are a welcome addition. Try draping them over the seating in the living room, and experiment with different fabrics such as boucles, woven knits and try layering them to create a cosy space. Not just decorative items, they’re practical and welcome additions on those nights which are extra chilly.

Layer up your lighting

It’s not just blankets and throws that can be layered. Layer the lighting too! The winter season is a great time to add in additional lighting, such as floor lamps and table lamps to complement the ceiling lighting. Just make sure to avoid white lights when trying to create a cosy ambiance, and instead opt for warm lighting to add depth and cosiness to the space.

Candles, candles and more candles

Leading nicely on from lighting, one of the best decorative additions of the winter season is candles. They’ll be sure to add a warm glow and bring instant cheer to any space.

Bring the outdoors in

Long gone are the days of bright and colourful blooms. But that’s not to say the home needs to be devoid of foliage until the summer months roll around again. Instead, embrace what’s taking place outside. Berries, pine branches and eucalyptus stems arranged in a vase is a simple yet effective way to make your home feel instantly seasonal. If foraging outdoors is not for you, to make the switch even easier, pick up some faux stems which can be brought out year after year as the seasons change, and there’s always the option to add in some real foliage too!

Indulge in winter scents

Whether it’s achieved through foliage, diffusers or candles (or a combination of all three throughout the home), this is another way to instantly make the home feel in keeping with the winter season taking place outside. Cinnamon, clove and orange is the perfect combination for a spicy and warm fragrance, whilst eucalyptus, pine and cedar are the ideal trio for a woody and fresh scent.

Switch up the drapes

Whilst many winter decor styling tips are all about making the home feel cosy, this tip will actually make the home feel cosy too! Switch curtains over to ones made out of a thicker fabric, such as wool, for an extra cosy look and feel. And whilst there’s a practical purpose behind changing over the drapes at this time of year, it’s also a great opportunity to not only change the fabric, but the colour and pattern too. And because it’s darker earlier, don’t be afraid to invest some money here too - after all, you’ll be spending a long time looking at them over the chillier months, so why not pick out a design which you love?

Paint in warm colours

If it’s a bigger change that you’re after to get your home winter season ready, try painting with warmer colours. White walls in the winter can quickly feel cold, clinical and sterile. Focus on the rooms where you’ll be spending the majority of the time - there’s no need to overhaul the entire home here - such as the living room. And if painting the whole room feels like too big a task, switching up the colour of just one wall can make a world of difference. Try experimenting with deep and earthy tones which are a huge colour trend right now, and lighter shades can be easily painted over again if you feel like another change up as the spring and summer months arrive.

So why not take the time this winter to embrace the season and make your home feel extra special? With just a few changes in decor, your home will be filled with additional cheer and added cosiness and is sure to be the perfect sanctuary to see you through the winter months.
